Some cities or counties have volunteer services that check on you, but it is typically a weekly status check, and what if they do not have enough volunteers? We are here for you every day including holidays.
Some programs are electronic. If something happens you press a button to get the help you need but what happens if reception fails? More importantly, you only press a button in distress, while we check on you with a live person daily and provide you with an emergency communication pendant.
If you are being abused, how will pressing a button really help you, or maybe an automated system? You could call the police but that creates more problems because the abuser may be a family member who may deny abusing you. We act as an advocate for you.
Typically, nursing home clients do not need a pendant. Our job in the nursing home environment is to make sure our advocate checks on you to make sure you are being treated properly and with care, and respect. No button does that.
The automated call system has issues as well. The system automatically calls you and you press a button. There is no human contact to help you, just an electronic service system.
Seniors make up only 12% of the population but commit almost 19% of suicides in the U.S. Some of the reasons why senior citizens are more at risk include loneliness, bereavement, and aging. Our endeavor is to not only check on them but provide a voice of compassion as well as care utilizing the pendant provided. You never know how a call at just the right time could be the difference between a person harming themselves and living. At Just Checking On You, we do not believe in a "throw-away generation".
